A person is legally presumed to be capable of making personal care decisions, including healthcare decisions. However, decisions at the end of life such as whether to remove artificial life support and provide palliative care, are made by others when a person is incapable. In some situations a patient having been diagnosed with a terminal illness does not want to wait for the illness to rob them of his/her basic functions and wishes to die with the help of their physician.
