Oakville’s Early History

Oakville’s Early History

April 7, 2015

Peter Watson Investments presents Michael Brown, from the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate, speaking on Oakville’s early history.

Michael Brown is an Oakville resident and a local playwright whose scripts deal with regional Canadian history. In 2005 he was awarded the prestigious Town of Oakville Community Spirit Award for Heritage & History for his ongoing stage work. He has been on staff at the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate for the past nine years, and enjoys being a part of their “outreach service” that brings the stories of early Oakville out into the local community.

Michael’s presentation focuses on the Chisholm family, the founders of Oakville. In 1827, Colonel William Chisholm purchased Crown land at the mouth of the Sixteen Mile Creek on Lake Ontario. He went on to develop the harbor and a shipping and shipbuilding business. Erchless Estate, the Chisholm family home, was named after the family’s Scottish castle, and became home to six generations of the Chisholm family.
